Sleep deprivation is something that comes with a newborn baby. However, what would also surprise you is that most women also face discomfort in sleeping when they are pregnant. This occurs in the first trimester and could last through the pregnancy.

Sleep problems in pregnancy are common and this is called Pregnancy Insomnia. In the first trimester, the pregnant woman gets a good amount of sleep which drops drastically. Pregnancy makes you feel tired all day and it causes Pregnancy Insomnia at night.

What causes Pregnancy Insomnia?

Here are a few reasons why you would be experiencing Pregnancy Insomnia.

Insomnia is when you experience bad quality sleep. You could be suffering from insomnia because of difficulty in being able to sleep. Having to wake up often at night, having difficulty in returning back to sleep or getting a disturbed sleep could be the reasons for pregnancy insomnia.

Pregnancy Insomnia could be because of:

  • Discomfort because of the increase in the size of the abdomen
  • Heartburn
  • Pain in the back
  • Anxiety
  • Stress
  • Frequent urination
  • Changes in the hormones
  • The anticipation of the new baby
How to deal with Pregnancy Insomnia

Here are a few ways in which you can deal with insomnia in pregnancy:

  • Try to sleep in a new position
  • Take a warm bath and a message and set up a soothing environment to sleep
  • Change the temperature of your room to a comfortable setting and play some natural sound to help you sleep
  • Try to relax using some relaxation techniques
  • Drink a warm glass of milk, eat a snack and read a book to try to get sleep
  • Exercise during the day to get tired and get a good night’s sleep
  • Try to get some sleep during the day time

Other reasons why you may be suffering from Pregnancy Insomnia could be because of stress. You may be nervous and feel anxious about labor and delivery and about the birth of the baby. You may worry about how you would be managing your work and life after being a mother. These thoughts can disturb your sleep.

Nothing can be done to get rid of these thoughts but try to keep worry aside as much as possible. Write down all the problems that you have and talk it out with your partner. This can help you to feel much better.

Have a constant routine

Try to have a consistent bedtime routine. This could train your mind to sleep. It is also soothing and gives your body cues that it is time to go to bed.

Pregnancy insomnia that affects the pregnant women in the first trimester generally passes away. However, if you still feel trouble in getting sleep then try to take short naps in the day. Do not consume any medicines to induce sleep or take any herbs until you consult your doctor. If insomnia is affecting your day to day functioning then you should consult your doctor who would prescribe sedatives that are safe to take in pregnancy.
