Belly and breast are the two areas that grow the fastest during pregnancy. During Pregnancy, your skin is stretched to the limit that your skin starts displaying little tears in the layers of skin in the form of stretch marks. In fact, 90 percent of all pregnant women get these stretch marks around their belly, breasts, thighs, and hips and are usually red, pink and at times purplish in color. While some moms consider these marks as a symbol of attaining motherhood, others may simply get disturbed and distressed with these new entries on their bodies.

What Causes Stretch Marks and When do they Appear?

The supporting layer of tissue beneath your skin starts reflecting tiny tears i.e. stretch marks somewhere between the 13th and 21st week of your pregnancy. While a majority of expecting women tend to receive these marks yet it is believed that stretch marks have a lot to do with genetics. In other words, if your mother has had stretch marks during pregnancy, your chance of having them readily increases. Stretch marks may also develop due to hormonal changes or sudden loss of fat in these regions.

Is it Possible to Get Rid of Stretch Marks?

Getting rid of stretch marks, that too completely is unfortunately not possible. While there aren’t any miracle products that can do away with these marks but there are certainly few ways to minimize their appearance. Let’s take a quick look:

  • Keep Your Skin Moisturized: You can keep your skin hydrated and moisturized with a nourishing cream or lotion and can make it appear smoother and toned. This can help you do away with the irritation that usually comes along with the stretch marks. Applying cocoa butter on your tummy would certainly help with itchy and dry skin.
  • Nourish Your Skin from Within: Consuming food rich in Vitamin C will nourish your skin from within and keep it toned and less susceptible to stretch marks. Also keeping your body hydrated with water might be of great help.
  • Keep a Check on Your Weight: While pregnancy certainly results in weight but it is important to ensure that you gain weight slowly and steadily rather than in large spurts. So make sure you follow your doctors’ advice for calorie intake during pregnancy rather than eating liberally just for the sake of eating for two. This would help you keep a check on stretch marks.
  • Muscles Exercises: You could try some exercises that might work on the muscles where you have stretch marks. Though it might not do away with the stretch marks yet it will certainly help tone the area.

While you might not be able to get rid of the stretch marks completely, they’ll certainly fade away to fine lines that will be quite close to your skin tone gradually after baby birth. So, do not spend too much on removing these marks as there is no proven way to cure them. So, wear these marks with pride and don’t let them mar your joy and happiness of attaining motherhood.
