What are the ill effects of Smoking During Pregnancy for You and Your Unborn Baby?

Congratulations! You are pregnant. A new chapter is about to be added in your life and you as a would-be mother would leave no stones unturned to ensure the health and safety of your little bundle of joy. Now, this may include everything from inculcating good habits or giving away some odd ones. So, if you too are an active smoker, it’s in the interest of you and your baby that you quit smoking as soon as possible.

Smoking that too while being pregnant can jeopardize the health and safety of you and your baby. This is because cigarette contains harmful chemicals such as nicotine, which when smoked actively by the expecting mother can significantly put her at a risk of pregnancy-related complications. So, every time you smoke, harmful chemical substances make their way to your fetus via the placenta. While you might find it challenging to quit smoking completely but with little efforts, you would be able to reach your goal. Listed below are a few important reasons why quitting smoking actually matters:

  • Your baby receives its food and oxygen from the placenta during pregnancy. Smoking puts you and your would-be baby at a much higher risk of having placenta related complications putting you and baby in danger. In order to ensure a safe delivery, you must quit smoking as soon as possible.
  • Smoking may result in the premature birth of a baby i.e. your baby doesn’t get completely developed within your womb. This may place your baby at a risk of some health issues, which may also turn out to be fatal. It’s in the interest of you and your baby to give up smoking so that your chances of going into labor much before the baby is completely developed decreases considerably.
  • If you continue smoking before and after pregnancy, you put your baby at an extremely high risk of SIDS(sudden infant death syndrome, also referred to as “crib death”). So, if you wish to protect your baby from this particular syndrome, you need to give up smoking immediately.
  • If you continue smoking throughout your pregnancy, chances are that you give birth to an underweight baby. This is because smoking during pregnancy hampers the growth and development of your baby before it is born. Babies born with low birth-weight often face health problems. To ensure your baby has a healthy birth weight, it’s extremely essential that you quit smoking, as early as possible.

Smoking during pregnancy can have extremely harmful effects on you, as well as your unborn fetus. However, quitting can largely reduce these effects while improving you are, as well as the health of your baby. Remember, the health and safety of your unborn baby depend on you and it is you who has to take the necessary precautions including giving up some habits or addictions as harmful as smoking.
